Community Solar Grid

Rourkela, Odisha

Community green energy project

Project Overview

The Community Solar Grid is a decentralised rooftop solar network deployed across a low-income township in Rourkela, eliminating grid dependence and redirecting energy savings into a shared community development fund.

Why This Matters

Reliable power is the foundation of daily life and local economic activity. A locally owned microgrid gives residents genuine energy sovereignty rather than dependence on a distant, unreliable utility.

Current Situation

Sector 19 in Rourkela had endured rolling power cuts averaging six hours a day for nearly a decade, undermining household stability and small businesses alike.

How We’re Helping

1,200 rooftop installations feed a shared battery bank managed by a resident cooperative with tiered tariffs that cross-subsidise the smallest users. Within two years, 15,000 homes achieved near-continuous power, funding new streetlighting from the savings fund.
